StoreDesk — billing & udhar khata for Indian shops
GST billing, udhar khata and stock for Indian shops — books, stationery, print, clothing, footwear, gifts and bakeries. Online, in any browser. Free to start.
It is a hosted web app: there is nothing to download, and it needs an internet connection. There is no separate mobile app — on a phone it is the same page, and it can be added to the home screen.
Built for
Counters this fits today
- Stationery & books
- Print & xerox
- Clothing & sarees
- Footwear
- Gifts & toys
- Bakery — cakes in fixed sizes
- Hardware & cement — by the bag or the piece
- Mobile repair
- Cosmetics & perfume
Sell loose by weight or length — fabric by the metre, grain by the gram? StoreDesk is not built for that yet, and we would rather say so here.
Fits today
- Stationery shops and bookstores
- Print, xerox and binding counters
- Clothing, saree and footwear shops — sizes included
- Bakeries — cakes in fixed sizes
- Gift, toy and general stores
- Mobile repair counters
- Hardware and cement shops — by the bag or the piece
Not built for yet
- Selling loose by weight or length — fabric by the metre, grain or sweets by the gram
- Interstate (IGST) billing and GSTR filing — not built yet
- Chemists, restaurants, and anything that tracks batches or expiry dates
Bookstore
Textbooks by class and board, school lists, and the parents who pay next week.
- The whole school list on one bill Add every book and notebook in one go, print a GST bill the parent can keep, and share it on WhatsApp before they leave the counter.
- Session-time udhar, tracked A parent buying ₹4,000 of books in June and paying in July is normal. Record it as udhar, see exactly who owes what, and send a reminder without an awkward phone call. On paid plans.
- Know what to reorder before the rush Stock counts drop as you bill. Low-stock items are flagged and a supplier order goes to your distributor as a WhatsApp message.
- Damaged stock is money, and it is counted Monsoon-damaged books get written off with a reason and valued at what you paid, so the loss shows up in your profit instead of vanishing.
Stationery
Hundreds of small items, quick counter sales, and margins too thin to leave to a guess.
- Ring up a sale in seconds The counter screen is built for ₹10 pens, not for invoices. Tap the item, take the cash, move to the next customer — a full bill only when someone asks for one.
- Real profit, not just takings Enter what you paid alongside what you charge, and the report shows the margin after wholesale cost, shop expenses and written-off stock. On paid plans.
- A starter catalogue, already typed Notebooks, pens, files, A4 reams — load a ready-made stationery list and edit the prices, instead of typing two hundred items to get started.
- Type the stock list once, from a photo Photograph your handwritten stock list and it is read into a list you check line by line before anything is saved. Nothing is added until you approve it. On paid plans.
Print & Xerox
Jobs that are collected later, per-page rates, and payment on pickup.
- Orders that wait for collection A 200-page binding is not a counter sale. Book it as an order with the customer’s number, mark it delivered, and bill it when they come to collect.
- Per-page rates that stay put B&W, colour, lamination, spiral binding — set the rate once and it is the same for every job, so nobody at the counter has to remember what you charge.
- Paper stock that tracks per sheet Selling an A4 ream reduces stock by 500 sheets; billing a 20-page xerox job reduces it by 20. Your paper stock is right whether you sell wholesale or by the page.
- Advance taken, balance on pickup Record the advance when the order is booked, send the customer the balance on WhatsApp, and take the rest on pickup.
Clothing & Footwear
Shirts, kurtis, sarees and shoes — one design in several sizes, exchanges for the wrong fit, and customers who pay in parts.
- One design, every size Add a shirt once with its sizes — S, M, L, XL — or a shoe in UK 6 to 10. Each size keeps its own price and its own stock count, and the counter shows the sizes to pick from instead of guessing one.
- The wrong size comes back Record the return and the replacement together. The difference is worked out, a credit note is issued, and the stock of both sizes moves.
- Part payments, tracked to the rupee A customer pays ₹1,500 against a ₹3,000 wedding purchase — record it in one tap and the balance lands in their khata on its own.
- Know which size is running out Stock drops as you sell, and the sizes running low are flagged before a customer asks for the one you no longer have.
Bakery
Bread and puffs by the piece, cakes in the sizes you bake, and custom orders promised for a time.
- Cakes in the sizes you bake Add a cake once with its sizes — 500 g, 1 kg, 2 kg — each with its own price and count. Stock is counted in whole cakes, so a size is sold whole, never weighed out.
- Custom orders with a ready-by time Book a birthday cake for 5 pm tomorrow with the customer’s number. The order board groups what is late, due today and due tomorrow, so nothing is forgotten on a busy evening.
- Advance now, balance at pickup Take an advance when the order is booked; the balance is on the order and on the bill when the customer collects.
- Waste is counted, not guessed Unsold stock written off at the end of the day is recorded with its reason and valued at what it cost you, so the loss shows in your profit.
General Retail
Gifts, toys, mobile accessories, hardware, general stores — different shelves, the same counter problems: stock, part payments and customers who pay later.
- Stock that counts itself Every sale drops the shelf count automatically, and items running low are flagged before you find out at the till instead of after.
- Part payments, tracked to the rupee A customer pays ₹1,500 against a ₹3,000 bill — record it in one tap, and the remaining balance lands in their khata on its own, not scribbled in a margin.
- Returns and exchanges without new math A different size or colour comes back — record the return, hand over the replacement, and the difference is worked out and settled for you.
- A bill on WhatsApp, not just paper Share the bill as a WhatsApp message the moment you print it, so the customer has it on their phone before they have left the counter.

Questions
- Is there a free GST billing software for a bookstore in India? Yes. StoreDesk is free to start and runs in a browser on any PC, tablet or phone, with no installation. It produces GST invoices with gapless invoice numbers, printable PDFs and a shareable bill link.
- Can I track udhar and khata for my customers? Yes. StoreDesk keeps a khata for every customer covering bills, counter sales and orders taken on credit, and allocates part payments oldest-first. On the Pro plan it can also send a WhatsApp reminder for what is still owed.
- Do I need to install anything? No. StoreDesk is a hosted web app: it opens in a modern browser such as Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on a computer, tablet or phone, and there is nothing to download or update. If you like, add it to your phone's home screen or your computer's desktop and it opens in its own window — it is the same web app, not a separate one. It needs an internet connection, like any website.
- Do I need a GST number to use it? No. GST is optional per shop. You can raise plain cash memos without a GSTIN, and turn GST on later without losing any existing bills.
- Does it handle interstate GST, multiple tax rates or GSTR filing? Partly. A bill can carry a different GST rate on each item, split as CGST + SGST, which is correct for sales inside your own state. Interstate (IGST) billing and a GSTR-ready export are not built yet — check with your CA if you sell across state lines.
- Can my staff use it without seeing everything? Yes, on the paid plans. A staff login opens only the counter: it can ring up sales, take orders, take udhar payments and returns, and close the day. It cannot open reports, profit or expenses, or change your items, prices or settings — the server refuses those, not just the screen. Pro includes one staff login and Enterprise five; on Free only the owner signs in.
- What happens on the Free plan after 30 days? Nothing is deleted and nothing stops working — Free is not a trial, and you can bill on it for as long as you like. Your lists of bills, counter sales and orders show the last 30 days; your items, your customers and what each customer owes you stay complete, and a customer can still open an old bill from its link. Move to Pro and all of your history is back on screen.
- Can I bring in my old khata or notebook? Yes. On every plan, including Free, you can enter what each customer already owes as an opening balance on their card, one customer at a time. On the paid plans you can bring a whole notebook in at once — from a photo of its pages or from a spreadsheet — and your item list the same way. Nothing read from a photo is saved until you have checked it line by line.
- Does it print on a thermal printer? Yes, as a beta, on every plan, on a 2-inch (58 mm) or 3-inch (80 mm) receipt printer — and a preview shows exactly what will print first. You choose how the printer is connected: a USB cable, Bluetooth, a printer paired with the computer as a COM port, or the printer's own driver through the print dialog. USB, Bluetooth and COM port need Chrome or Edge on a computer or an Android phone, and a Bluetooth printer on a computer is paired in Windows or macOS settings first. The driver way works in any browser on a device where the printer is installed. Any printer can also print the bill as an A4 or A5 PDF. Printed bills and receipts are always in English, because receipt printers carry no Indian-language script.
- Can a customer pay me by UPI from the bill? Yes, once you add your shop's UPI ID in Settings. The bill PDF carries a scan-to-pay UPI QR for the amount still due, and the bill link you send on WhatsApp shows a Pay button that opens the customer's own UPI app. The money goes straight to your bank account — StoreDesk never touches it and takes no fee. UPI does not tell the app when money arrives, so check your own payment app before you mark the bill paid.
- Is there a mobile app? No, and you do not need one. On a phone StoreDesk is the same web page you use on a computer: open it in Chrome or Safari, sign in, and add it to your home screen if you want an icon. There is nothing to download from the Play Store or the App Store. An Android phone can print receipts from Chrome, as the thermal printer answer above says.
- Does it work offline? No — StoreDesk does not bill offline. A bill gets its number from our server, so making one needs the internet. What is safe is the sale you are typing: if the connection drops, the lines stay on the screen and survive a reload, and the sale is sent the moment the internet is back, without being saved twice.
- Which shops is StoreDesk for? Shops that sell things they can count: books, stationery, print and xerox, clothing, footwear, gifts, cosmetics and perfume, and bakeries — and hardware and cement sold by the bag or the piece, and mobile repair counters. Stock is counted in whole units, and a product sold in fixed sizes — size M, a 1 kg cake — is added once with its sizes. It is not built for a shop that weighs or cuts an arbitrary amount, such as loose grocery, sweets by weight or fabric by the metre, or for chemists and restaurants.
- Can I lock the screen at the counter? Yes, on every plan. Lock the screen when the counter is left alone — unlock with your passcode. Turn it on in Settings; a staff login unlocks with its own password.
